Ramadan is not an ordinary sales month
Every year I see brands in the UAE treat Ramadan like any other campaign: the same offer, the same tone, with a crescent added to the design. It rarely works.
Ramadan changes the rhythm of the whole country. Working hours are usually shortened, evenings become the busiest part of the day, families gather for iftar and suhoor, and generosity, charity and gifting take centre stage. People do not stop buying. They buy differently, at different times and for different reasons.
After 16 years in Dubai, from the retail floor to running Digitizer, my view is simple: in Ramadan, respect comes before reach. If your marketing feels like it understands the month, customers remember it. If it feels like it is only using the month, they remember that too.
In Ramadan, respect comes before reach.
When is Ramadan 2027 in the UAE?
According to astronomical forecasts reported by Gulf News and The National, Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on or around Monday 8 February 2027. The official start is confirmed only after the crescent moon is sighted, so treat the date as a planning estimate.
Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days, which puts Eid Al Fitr around 9 or 10 March 2027. Build your plan with a few days of flexibility at both ends, and update your dates as soon as the UAE announces them.
When to start planning
Start planning in November and December, not in late January. Here is the timeline I recommend to brands.
Two to three months before: agree the objective, the offer, the budget and the message. Book creators, photographers and production early, because the best people are fully booked by January.
Six to eight weeks before: produce the content, prepare landing pages and WhatsApp replies, check stock and delivery capacity, and brief the customer service team.
Two to three weeks before: start building awareness and audiences, so that people already know you when Ramadan begins and competition for attention rises.
During Ramadan: keep a steady presence, adjust based on results each week, and save part of your budget for the final ten days and Eid.
How customer behaviour changes
The day shifts later. Activity on phones, in malls and in restaurants moves towards the evening, after iftar and late into the night. Schedule your posts, ads, live sessions and customer service around those hours rather than your normal office day.
Families and gatherings matter more. Food, hospitality, home, gifting and family offers become more relevant. Think about the household and the guests, not only the individual buyer.
Generosity and giving matter. Charity, community and doing good are central to the month. Brands that support a genuine cause, quietly and consistently, earn far more trust than brands that simply attach the word Ramadan to a discount.
Shopping builds towards Eid. New clothes, perfume, gifts, sweets and travel all rise towards the end of the month. Many purchases are planned, so customers compare carefully, ask questions and look for brands they already trust.
Messages and tone that work
Lead with meaning, not price. A message about family, gratitude, generosity or togetherness, connected honestly to what you sell, will usually outperform a plain percentage-off banner.
Be respectful in the details. Consider the timing of food and drink content, choose modest and appropriate visuals, and avoid humour that could feel out of place during a spiritual month. When in doubt, ask someone who observes Ramadan to review your creative.
Get the language right. If you produce Arabic content, work with native Arabic writers who understand the culture and the season. A careless greeting or a literal translation is noticed immediately.
Keep your promises. Ramadan and Eid deliveries are often gifts with a deadline. If you promise delivery before Eid, make sure your operations can deliver it. Missing that promise does more damage than not making it.
Channels to prioritise
Social media in the evening. Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Snapchat are where people spend their late-night hours. Plan content and ads for after iftar and before suhoor.
WhatsApp. Many Ramadan and Eid orders end in a conversation. Prepare quick replies, gift options and delivery cut-off dates in advance, and make sure someone is answering in the evening, not only during office hours.
Search. People search for iftar venues, Ramadan offers, gift ideas and Eid outfits. Make sure your website and Google Business Profile show your Ramadan hours, offers and delivery dates clearly.
Creators. Choose creators whose audiences trust them and whose content fits the month, and check that any creator you pay holds a valid UAE Advertiser Permit.
The final ten days and Eid
The last part of Ramadan is when many people finish their Eid shopping and gift buying. Treat it as its own campaign, with its own budget, creative and stock plan.
Make gifting easy: gift sets, gift wrapping, personal messages and clear delivery cut-off dates. Then prepare for Eid itself, when families celebrate, travel and go out, with offers and messages suited to the holiday rather than a repeat of your Ramadan creative.
Finally, plan the week after Eid. Thank the customers who bought from you, ask for reviews and follow up. Ramadan is a chance to start relationships, not just to finish a sales target.
What to measure
Look beyond reach and views. Measure enquiries, especially WhatsApp conversations, orders and revenue by week, average order value, delivery performance against your promises, new customers who buy again after Eid, and the reviews and recommendations you receive.
Compare each week of Ramadan with the same weeks of last year rather than with a normal month. And write down what you learn while it is fresh, because next year's Ramadan plan should start from this year's results.
A Ramadan marketing checklist
1. Mark the expected dates: Ramadan around 8 February 2027, Eid Al Fitr around 9 or 10 March, and update them when they are confirmed.
2. Set one clear objective and one main offer.
3. Book creators and production by December.
4. Finish creative, landing pages and WhatsApp replies by mid-January.
5. Check stock, delivery capacity and Eid delivery cut-off dates.
6. Update your website and Google Business Profile with Ramadan hours and offers.
7. Schedule content and customer service for evening and late-night hours.
8. Support a genuine cause, and talk about it modestly.
9. Keep a separate budget for the final ten days and Eid.
10. Follow up after Eid, ask for reviews and record what you learned.
Frequently asked questions
When does Ramadan 2027 start in the UAE? Astronomical forecasts point to Monday 8 February 2027. The official date is confirmed by the UAE after the crescent moon is sighted, so plan with a few days of flexibility.
When should businesses start planning Ramadan marketing? Two to three months before Ramadan. For 2027, that means agreeing the plan in November and December, finishing creative by mid-January and starting awareness two to three weeks before Ramadan begins.
What is the best time to post during Ramadan? Evening and late night are usually the busiest times, after iftar and before suhoor. Check your own audience data, and schedule posts, ads and customer service around those hours.
Should brands offer discounts during Ramadan? Offers can work, but discounts alone rarely build loyalty. Messages about family, generosity and gifting, combined with a genuinely useful offer, usually perform better and protect your brand.
How is Eid marketing different from Ramadan marketing? Ramadan marketing focuses on reflection, family and preparation. Eid marketing is celebratory, built around gifts, new clothes, outings and travel, and it needs its own creative, budget and delivery plan.
